iOS 18 makes iPhone more personal, capable, and intelligent than ever

The most significant makeover of Photos in history, significant changes for maintaining connectivity, and the introduction of Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system, are all included in this edition.
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA: Today, Apple gave a sneak peek at iOS 18, a significant update that includes a tonne of customisation choices, the largest makeover of the Photos app to date, new Mail inbox management capabilities, satellite messaging for Messages, and much more.

Users will have the ability to personalise the Lock Screen’s bottom buttons, organise widgets and applications in any available area, and rapidly access additional Control Centre features. In Photos, photo libraries are arranged automatically into a new single view, and useful new collections make favourites quickly available. With the use of on-device intelligence, Mail sorts emails into categories to streamline the inbox, and iMessage now offers brand-new text effects. When a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is unavailable, users may now converse via satellite in the Messages app thanks to innovative technology that powers current iPhone satellite capabilities.

Built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Additionally, iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that is incredibly useful and relevant. It makes use of the capabilities of Apple silicon to simplify and expedite daily chores by understanding and producing words and graphics, executing actions across applications, and drawing upon personal context.

We are pleased to present iOS 18. With amazing features like enhanced customisation and functionality, a revamped Photos app, and potent ways to keep in touch with Messages, it’s a major update. Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, said that there are several advantages for all parties involved. “With privacy at its core, Apple Intelligence will deliver powerful, intuitive, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience. This release also heralds the start of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence.” We are eager for people to get their hands on it.

New Levels of Customization and Capability

Users of iPhones now have more customisation options for Control Centre, Lock Screen, and Home Screen. On the Home Screen, users may now organise widgets and applications in any available area. For example, they can arrange them to precisely frame a wallpaper or sit just above the dock for convenient access. Users have the ability to customise their experience by making app icons and widgets seem bigger and giving them a dark or tinted appearance.

Control Centre has been updated with additional levels of flexibility and customisation to make it simpler for users to access many of the tasks they do on a daily basis. With the redesign, users can now quickly access new groupings of frequently used options, such media playback, connection, and Home controls, and swipe between them with ease. Now, users can add controls from compatible third-party applications to Control Centre and instantly unlock a car or start filming material for social media, all from one location. Users may rearrange the controls to suit their needs, including resizing them to the perfect size and forming new groups, all of which are shown in the controls gallery.

Users may now choose from alternatives in the controls gallery or remove them completely, making it possible to change the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen for the first time. On the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, users may rapidly access controls found in the gallery by tapping the Action button.

Photos Gets a Unified View, New Collections, and Customization

To make it easier for consumers to identify and revisit memorable experiences, Photos gets its largest overhaul to date. The classic grid is presented in a simpler single view, and new collections allow users to explore material by topics without having to arrange it into albums. Additionally, collections may be pinned to maintain easy access to favourites.

A fresh carousel view showcases daily updated highlights of cherished individuals, animals, locations, and more. Libraries come to life with autoplaying material, allowing users to browse while relishing in the memories of the past. Since every user has a different picture library, the app allows users to personalise it by allowing them to organize collections, pin collections for easy access, and display their most valued photos in a carousel format.

Powerful Ways to Stay Connected in Messages

All-new text effects are added to iMessage, enhancing every letter, word, phrase, or emoji with lively, animated looks to make conversations come to life. By using formatting tools like bold, underlining, italics, and strikethrough, users may more effectively convey their tone. Tapbacks now allow users to construct messages and schedule them to be sent at a later time. They also support any emoji or sticker.
The Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more dependable group communications than SMS and MMS when texting contacts who do not own an Apple device.

In iOS 18, satellite messaging is included for situations when Wi-Fi and cellular networks are unavailable. Enables users to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS directly from the Messages app. Messages via satellite is powered by the same ground-breaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities.3 Dynamic Island lets users always know when they are connected to a satellite. iMessages sent by satellite are end-to-end encrypted as the platform was designed to safeguard user privacy.

iOS 18 Improvements for Mail

Mail is going to roll out additional inbox management and update features later this year. Incoming emails are sorted and organised into Primary for personal and urgent communications, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social media alerts, and Promotions for marketing emails and discounts by use of on-device classification. Additionally, Mail has a new digest view that compiles all of a company’s pertinent communications so users can swiftly search for the content that’s urgent.

Big Updates to Safari

Highlights and a revamped Reader experience make it even simpler to find information online with Safari, the fastest browser in the world. Safari has the ability to reveal important site information using machine learning. Users may listen to an artist’s track directly from an article on the song or album, or they can instantly find the location of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark by reading the synopsis of the article. A table of contents and synopsis are provided for lengthier articles in Reader, which has been revamped to provide even more opportunities to read articles without interruption.

Introducing the Passwords App

Building on the success of Keychain, which was released over 25 years ago, users can now easily retrieve their passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, verification codes, and passwords with ease thanks to the new Passwords app. Users may also get notifications from the app about typical vulnerabilities, such passwords that are often used or can be readily guessed, as well as passwords that have been linked to known data breaches.

New Privacy Features Intended to Give Users More Power

With features to govern who may view their applications, how contacts are shared, and how their iPhones connect to accessories, iOS 18 offers consumers even more control.

Apps that are hidden or locked provide users the assurance that private information—like content and notifications—won’t accidentally be seen by unauthorised parties. applications may now be locked, and users can move them to a locked, hidden applications folder to conceal them for even more privacy. Content such as emails or messages inside an application that is locked or hidden is concealed from search results, system alerts, and other locations.

By enabling users to pick which contacts to share with an app, iOS 18 gives them more control. Furthermore, developers may now couple third-party accessories with iPhones in a smooth manner while maintaining user privacy by preventing apps from seeing every device on the user’s network.

Apple Intelligence Transforms the iPhone Experience

Siri advances significantly with the help of Apple Intelligence, becoming much more individualised, contextually relevant, and natural. Users may converse with Siri in any manner that seems appropriate at the time by typing to her and switching between text and speech.

Apple raises the bar for AI privacy with Private Cloud Compute, which enables users to choose between on-device processing and bigger, server-based models that operate on specialised Apple silicon servers. Independent experts can confirm that when requests are sent to Private Cloud Compute, data is solely utilised to satisfy the user’s demands and is neither kept nor made available to Apple.
