Westminster was unprepared for the former president’s unannounced visit.

LONDON: Former American President Barack Obama stopped into No. 10 Downing Street for an unexpected tea party with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Obama, the president from 2009 to 2017, arrived No. 10 just after 3 p.m. and strolled along the well-known street while waving to the media. He is in the city for an event hosted by his nonprofit, the Obama Foundation.

Subsequently, Downing Street stated that the two conversed over cups of tea for around an hour. Among the many topics they covered was artificial intelligence.

When reporters yelled questions at the former president as he was leaving, he refused to answer, although he did say he was “tempted” to comment on the situation of Russian democracy.

When Obama last visited Downing Street in April 2016, just before the Brexit referendum, he said that, should Britain decide to leave, it would be placed “at the back of the queue” for trade negotiations with the United States. Four years after Brexit, the United Kingdom and the United States do not currently have a trade deal.

Obama and Sunak have not yet been acquainted, despite the fact that the prime minister has had several meetings with Joe Biden, Obama’s vice president, while in office.
