Artificial Intelligence Training Models

When discussing AI, the term “training data” often comes up. This refers to the process by which AI systems improve over time by learning from new data. Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, employs algorithms to analyze this data and produce results.

Broadly speaking, there are three main types of learning models used in machine learning:

Supervised Learning involves training a model using labeled data (structured data) to map inputs to outputs. For example, to train an algorithm to recognize images of cats, you would provide it with pictures that are labeled as cats.

Unsupervised Learning uses unlabeled data (unstructured data) to find patterns and relationships within the data. Unlike supervised learning, the outcome is not predefined. Instead, the algorithm learns to group data based on its attributes, making it useful for pattern recognition and descriptive modeling.

Semi-Supervised Learning combines aspects of both supervised and unsupervised learning, using a mix of labeled and unlabeled data. In this approach, the end result is known, but the algorithm must determine how to organize and process the data to achieve the desired outcome.

Reinforcement Learning is often described as “learning by doing.” An agent learns to perform a task through trial and error, receiving positive reinforcement for correct actions and negative reinforcement for mistakes. For instance, training a robotic hand to pick up a ball involves using reinforcement learning to adjust the robot’s actions based on feedback.

Common Types of Artificial Neural Networks

A prevalent training model in AI is the artificial neural network, which mimics the human brain’s structure.

A neural network consists of artificial neurons, or perceptrons, which are computational units that classify and analyze data. Data enters through the first layer of the network, where each perceptron processes it and passes the results to the next layer.

Networks with more than three layers are known as “deep neural networks” or “deep learning” networks, with some modern versions having hundreds or thousands of layers. The final output is used to accomplish tasks such as object classification or pattern detection.

Here are some of the most common types of artificial neural networks:

Feedforward Neural Networks (FF) are one of the earliest neural network models, with data moving unidirectionally through layers until an output is produced. Today, most feedforward networks are “deep feedforward” networks with multiple layers, including hidden layers. They are typically paired with an error-correction algorithm called “backpropagation,” which adjusts the network’s weights by working backward from the output to identify and correct errors.

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) differ from feedforward networks by using time series or sequential data. RNNs maintain a “memory” of previous layers, which helps in processing sequences. For instance, RNNs are effective for natural language processing tasks, as they can consider previous words in a sentence. RNNs are commonly used in applications like speech recognition, translation, and image captioning.

Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks are an advanced form of RNNs with the ability to remember information from several layers back, thanks to “memory cells.” LSTM networks are particularly useful in tasks requiring memory of long-term dependencies, such as speech recognition and predictive modeling.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are widely used for image recognition tasks. CNNs have distinct layers, including convolutional and pooling layers, that analyze different parts of an image. Initial convolutional layers may detect basic features like colors and edges, while deeper layers identify more complex features.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) involve two competing neural networks: a generator and a discriminator. The generator creates data, while the discriminator evaluates its authenticity. This adversarial process improves the quality of the generated data, making GANs useful for creating realistic images and artistic works.
